Mindy Kaling And B.J. Novak To Kick Off Second Annual BookCon

March 11, 2015

Former Duo from “The Office” to Discuss Kaling’s Upcoming Book Why Not Me? to Open Star Studded Convention Where Books and Pop Culture Collide

NORWALK, CT - March 11, 2015 - Today, ReedPOP, the leading producer of pop culture events and team behind BookCon, announced that Mindy Kaling, star of the hit Fox series “The Mindy Project,” will take the stage to kick off the second annual BookCon on Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 AM. Joining her is her former co-star and on-screen love from “The Office,” B.J. Novak. Together they join the current BookCon roster of bestselling authors and Hollywood heavyweights including Academy Award winner Julianne Moore, Nick Offerman, John Hodgman, Taye Diggs, Rainbow Rowell, Mamrie Hart, Meg Cabot, Jodi Picoult, Jacqueline Woodson, Sherman Alexie and David Levithan, with more exciting guests to be announced in the coming months.

With their excellent on-screen (and now on-stage) rapport, Kaling and Novak will hold a special BookCon conversation around Kaling’s second book, Why Not Me? (Crown; Archetype on sale September 29, 2015), which is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Kaling’s 2011 mega best-seller Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). Mindy’s life has changed significantly since the publication of her first book. She is now the creator, producer, writer, and star of her own TV show, "The Mindy Project." She is, as she puts it, "a tiny bit famous," the perks of which include being three assistants, two phones calls and a really good lie away from obtaining Bradley Cooper's e-mail address and having convicts writing her fan mail from prison. She's gone through some other major changes as well--she's watched friends start their own families, and she's grappled with her own balance of work and private life. Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, the heartache, and the celebrations of her second coming of age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who's ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to.

“As witnessed by the success of their books and on-screen work, Mindy and B.J. are two of the most inventive and original comedic minds in Hollywood,” said Brien McDonald, Show Manager of BookCon. “Kicking off BookCon with their witty exchanges will be an unforgettable moment for fans to experience and set the stage for the rest of our programming perfectly.”

Mindy Kaling is an actor, writer, producer and director. She penned her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) in 2011. The book was featured on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Kaling starred as Kelly Kapoor on the Emmy Award-winning comedy “The Office”. She also wrote 23 episodes of the series, including “Niagara,” which scored her an Emmy nod. While on “The Office”, she won several Writers Guild Awards, Television Critics Association Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for best ensemble.

In 2012, Kaling created the critically-acclaimed series “The Mindy Project,” in which she also stars, and which was nominated for a Writers Guild Award for Best New Series. Kaling will lend her voice to Pixar's “Inside Out” this summer, and she is featured in Seth Rogen's upcoming comedy “Xmas”. She made her film debut in Judd Apatow's “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”. Kaling was named one of Time Magazine's Most 100 Influential People in the World in 2012. In 2014, she was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year.

B.J. Novak is well known for his work as an actor, writer, director, and executive producer on the "The Office." He is also known for his performances in films such as Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Disney's Saving Mr. Banks. In 2014, Novak published two books: "One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories" (Knopf), a critically acclaimed New York Times Best Seller with excerpts featured in The New Yorker and on This American Life; and "The Book With No Pictures" (Dial/Penguin), a phenomenon that has spent 22 consecutive weeks (and counting) as a #1 New York Times Best Seller.
